He wore netted hat
Uncle had honeybee swarms
stings with sweet reward

Hives back in the day
working honeybees made hives
sight to see in tree

I marveled seeing him
up on ladder checking hives

I admire people who can work with them. I couldn’t

As much about the bees as your relationship with you uncle – delightful to read.

Becca: The first time the subject came up, the man “settled” for a filterless cigarette ! We of course, in the mid seventies were grossed out…he was happy and took care of it himself. Thank goodness !
Tobacco is not going to get any cheaper unless you hang around “chaw-ers” so it might be a good stash to have !
Thanks for the added comment ☺♥.

I always have admired beekeepers and their ability to work with the honeybees. I enjoy the fruits of their labor (both bees and keepers), but I am glad I am not the keeper!! I would prefer cat scratches over bee stings!

Becca,
I am really frightened of the little critters, but I have learned to stand still and they will not usually sting.
Also, working at the (nursing) home I learned that chewed tobacco paste will take away the sting !

well there is a lot of chewing tobacco in TX … guess I will get a can “just in case” … thanks for the tip!

As a former beekeeper, I long to have access to the little critters again. Your verses made me realise how much I miss them!

Impressive. Except for my uncle, I never knew anyone who was a beekeeper. It is easy to become
attached to fascinating hard workers…I watch the programs on bees and the bees are so amazing.
Thanks for stopping by and leaving your interesting comment.

I shudder just thinking about being close enough to watch. I love bees for what they do but I’m afraid of them and I can’t stand swarming things…

Tilly,
there is one faded photo of my uncle on a ladder dealing with a swarm like the photo I found…I can’t remember the date, and I must have been very young when I got to see him deal with honey bees, with just the netted hat to cover his face. He had the rest of his body covered, but I’m sure he got bit thru the fabric.
Back in the day, that was how they worked…you did what you had to do. Shudder, also ! Bee keepers fascinate me, the work of the bees is mystifying. I never had the urge to be a bee keeper or
visit bees again that I can recall !
Thanks for taking time to write a comment.

Better him than me, too! Bees don’t like me, and the feeling is mutual!
Cute poem, Siggi!
