We sang “Happy Birthday” to Judy.
There was the biggest candle
that I’d ever seen
on top of the cake.
I hope they don’t do that for me
when my birthday comes.
.
It was a pleasant surprise for her…
I’d heard someone say
“don’t forget the cake”
when she sat down to eat.
She laughed, and let them take
photos from every angle.
No fear of the candle going out…
it would burn for a month !
.
On Mondays,
at a community supper,
they always ask if anyone
has a birthday that week…
I always think…
how do I not let them
know when my birthday is ?
I know my friends,
if I stay home,
they’ll get me the next week.
I can’t hide forever.
Or can I ?
.
I panic right then and there.
How old am I now ?
I try to figure out how old
I am and will be soon.
Can I hide out.
Fool I am,
I let people know
that I couldn’t remember
or do the math
“How old will I be if I
was born in 1944 ?”
Why didn’t I zip my lips.
Sigh.
Big Sigh.
.
Panic.
Do others panic,
forget to renew their
driver’s license…
or check a dozen times
to be sure they remembered
and it is current ?
Can you tell I forgot one
year … the year I turned
fifty…long ago now.  Yikes !
I was so stunned,
a surprise party was
the day before …
I forgot to renew my license
and three days later,
when I remembered,
it was a long holiday weekend !
.
Hmmm.  I never thought of this:
that year, did my mother call
and wish me Happy Birthday…
or did she call the day before,
to tell me she wished I’d been
a Valentine?
Or was it the year she forgot, too?
Hmmm.
.
This year I need to tell them
the correct day and year…
I really panicked the year
they told me I didn’t have
a driver’s license…
the lady kept asking me to
repeat the date,
and finally, I realized
I gave the wrong day !
Right year. Wrong day.
I laughed but I didn’t think
it was funny.
