Live the Moment: dVerse Meeting the Bar
.
Prompt: sense all that is around you,
go to that peaceful place of writing,
and be present in the moment and write.
——————————————————
.
When I turn off the tv
and see what the present moment
is like:
The house is quiet,
and peaceful,
alone with my thoughts.
.
I hear a “hum” like an old
fashion radiator giving off heat
and wonder
were it is coming from,
realizing, it is me,
what I hear is in my head,
but it doesn’t bother me…
steady and not too loud.,
quiet and peaceful,
I’m still alone with my thoughts.
.
I am very hard of hearing….
“deaf” one grand-child says.
I know there is traffic going
by the house,
but only if I look to see it.
Lunch was done long ago…
I can’t hear the microwave
“ding”
when I got distracted
“listening”
and writing,
time got away from me !
And it’s okay,
I won’t waste away
any day soon
.
Some days I can hear the click
of the keys as I type,
not today
just the dull tapping
of the space bar
at times.
.
So it is quiet and peaceful,
alone with my thoughts.
.
I look outside,
snow is still on the branches
and thru one window,
it looks like a bird has perched
atop the cross on the steeple next door.
Usually it is a seagull,
but today, maybe a crow as it is very
dark in color.
I can’t hear if the birds are calling,
or talking or fighting,
as it snowed and the windows
are closed today…
even if the windows were open,
I wouldn’t hear them…
who am I fooling !☺.
.
Another sound…
could it be the cat snoring ?
I get up and go over to where she
seems to be asleep,
and yes, it is her snoring !
.
All is well.
It is quiet and peaceful,
alone with my thoughts.

Snow, cat snoring…what a beautiful image. Soon your world outside will be flashing with colors. Thank you for your visit Siggi.

There are pros and cons at every stage: I get so mad when I miss a crucial bit of dialogue when an actor turns away from the camera, (and mumbles!) but yes, we don’t hear the irritating mechanical noises – at least not the exterior ones! The tinnitus is another ball game altogether. Your poem puts it all wonderfully well.

Wow! This is surely a wonderful poem. I can sense the serenity and peace.

I sense a certain serenity and acceptance of your hearing problem and am sure that underlies your ability to be “present.” Beautiful photo, too.

You and I have similar hearing loss problems. I’ve lost all hearing in my left ear and for this reason, I no longer can discern what direction the sound is coming from. When dinning out is seems my right hear picks up all sounds in a somewhat earth shattering loudness and the room seems rawcous with cacaphony. I pick up all sounds and cannot determine which are which group. I have to use the phone in speakerphone mode at all times. My very expensive hearing help me a lot but why doesn’t the insurance companies cover them like they do for eye glasses?

I am totally deaf in one ear and suffer from tinnitus. Your poem was of great interest to me. Clearly there are differences, but there is much in common. I enjoyed hearing the voice that comes through, found it very moving, and the whole piece well crafted.

David,
thanks for the kind comments…the same but different experiences I’d presume with the hearing loss.
Please visit again.

Hearing is something I take for granted. Thanks for this insightful poem
siggiofmaine
Margaret…
thank you for your thoughtful comment. Sight is what I took for granted until I had cataracts and didn’t know it and thought my sight was going forever !

What a journey through the day of you and we are there in the act of writing companioned by the cat and even without its song the bird that waits on the cross (roads). Deep as the snow and stirring. Well done.

I have suffered significant hearing loss over the past year or so, and I’ve found that when your ears don’t hear as well your mind hears itself more clearly.
siggiofmaine
Shawna,
Thank you for taking the time to write such a nice comment.
I do agree with you and I do wish you well with your hearing loss. It is something that I have always had, but as I age it does get worse. There can be some contentment in the quiet, and “just being” there without the distractions of the world around you. The distractions … the sounds of life around one are a true loss in
life…but it is important, in my way of thinking to accept what cannot be and thrive on what is…and for me that is the gift of sight with the cataract surgery I had two years ago.
Peace

I agree! I have three young children, and I am a little bit thankful they don’t sound quite as loud when they scream. 🙂

I like all the details and the way you talk to yourself. Could be me as well.
Great write.
siggiofmaine
Buddah,
Thank you for your wonderful comment…my father would always say that the only problem with talking to your self came
if you argued with yourself when you did it. ☺.
