Stone fences,
hard work of love
use no mortar,
rocks fit like a glove.
.
Natures puzzle
for man

to find each rock
that
fits just right
to stand the test
of man and time.
.
A work of beauty
and common use.
Like a magician,
the fence builder
finds each stone
in piles and piles
of unmatched beauty
and ragged edges.
.
If it’s not
a perfect fit
in size, shape,
color or source,
the search goes on.
.
Stone fences may
be hundreds of years
old…stones in place
by unknown hands,
gathered by men
of another era,
never changed
over time.
Stones as old
as time,
comfortable with their
companion stones
fit together by fate
long ago…
and there they
have stood the test
of time.
.
Some fences
are never completed,
always something
to do…
(for forty plus years
I’ve watched on tall
rock fence be built
and rebuilt many times)
rocks go up,
rocks come down
to find a new home
amongst their
friends from the
stone age.
