Thinking of Mimi on her birthdate
.
Daffodils are being sold
A sign of spring reminds me
of Mimi so full of joy
and enjoying the changing
of the season.
.
What a blessing the world received
the day Joan was born.
Laughter in the rain
the sun in her spirit.
Missing Joan, with each daffodil of spring.

.
Last week, I went to St. Saviours Episcopal Church in
Bar Harbor, primarily to hear Chimesmaster Ilia Karp play
St. Saviour’s bells church bells.
.
I planned enough time to walk thru the church
and take time looking at the stained glass windows.
Joan, myself and often Ralph with us,
over the years spent many occasions at the church
for various programs.
.
The window that I have here is the one that started me
down memory lane about the times at the church with Joan.
It is near the front door and amazing. Another particular
space was the small chapel where Joan and I had attended,
I believe it was Morning Prayer, during a workshop.
The feeling of intimacy and the Holy Spirit is what I recall now.

An annual event at the Preble’s house:
Birthday Party for Jesus !
An all out dinner and singing Happy Birthday to Jesus, candles lit on the birthday cake to boot.
Many of you may not know that I had only very infrequent brushes with church til I moved to Maine.
.
Christmas growing up was usually driving 3 hours to the maternal grandparents for a nice meal and after a bit of conversation, driving back to West Allis, WI so my father could start inventory at his Woolworth Store… inventory had to be completed by December 31.
I can’t remember ever going to a Christmas church service.
And then along comes Joan 🙂 , the Prebles, St. Dunstan’s
and new family traditions.

the dice game
friends and family gather
home made ice cream
dice all colors shapes sizes

.
A fond memory of my friend, Joan, at whose
house everyone gathered for holidays,
birthdays, any event that spelled party.
On New Year’s Eve, the dice were spilled
on to the table … awesome array of choices.
.
Any age can play … the toddlers learn their
numbers and laugh as they assist the others
play (there are HUGE dice that are safe for
toddlers and young children.)

While we played, the ice cream maker was
churning away on the back stoop. So yummy
after the game is finished.

Joan touched so many lives
every day in her humble way.
It will take Joan’s village of people to carry on
learn to carry on her work and legacy.
I feel blessed for having known Joan
Many, myself included
found themselves a better person
in the presence a someone living
by their faith without question.

Small stones: a journey of mindfulness
April 8 ·

change

she is the glue
that holds the family
and friends
together
.
it was thought she would
live forever
we’d all go go
to the great beyond before her
.
soon we all, her family,
and, us, the multitudes of friends,
will be learning our dear friend
is now our guiding star.
.
she is prepared
she knows
bitter sweet

.
Joan, a long time friend,
died before before we were prepared …
we thought she’d be with us 2 decades more..
but on God’s time on April 13, 2018 at age 78.
Her Celebration of Life was May 5, 2018.
.
A remarkable woman of faith she humbly demonstrated
and never flaunted. Just lived as she thought
as a follower of Jesus, she should.
.
Loving 3/4/5 year olds she ran Sunshine Pre-School
and then at the YMCA day care.
.
A life time Girl Scout from age 6.
.
Her husband adored her to the end.
A wonderful mother, grand-mother, and great-grandmother
to a family of 15 … her legacy will live on thru them
and the multitudes of friends that will follow her teachings
as a church school teacher, and an Episcopal Deacon for 15 years.
.
Thru the next weeks, I will share memories of Joan,
Ralph, her husband, her children, and grands…
thru my memories being blessed to have known her since
the early 1970’s.
.
Rest in Peace, Dear Joan.
No longer in pain,
reunited with loved ones
gone before you.
Amen ! Hallelujah !
